USA taking giant leaps toward becoming a police state

Domestic spying infuriates me; unilaterally declarations of US citizens an enemy combatants strikes me as fascism; the suspension of habeas corpus and trial by jury makes my blood boil; the legalization of torture, secret overseas detention and renditions freezes it. But if all of that didn't phase you, maybe this will (via China Hearsay):

Lawyers for the US Department of Justice defended the six-year detention of Huzaifa Parhat, a Chinese Uighur Muslim, at Guantanamo Bay in oral arguments before the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit April 4. The US claims Parhat is an “enemy combatant” due to his ties with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), a group that calls for independence from China and was designated a terrorist organization by the US State Department in 2002. The DoJ acknowledged that Parhat did not fight against the US and that there is no evidence that he intended to do so, but said he can still be held under the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force Act because ETIM is affiliated with al-Qaeda.
Is this the future for Taiwan Independence activists, too? Could we theoretically end up on a Chinese terrorist list, and then a Washington terrorist list, and then end up in indefinite detention?

I'm actually much less concerned about that particular point than I am about the implementation of this system in general. This is exactly the kind of society we were trying to avoid. This is the police state, the only variable being how often it wants to rear its ugly head. We need a radical reversal in our direction and powers of the government,

What is the evidence for 'affiliation' with Al Qaeda? What are the standards for evaluating that evidence? And who gets to evaluate it? Some analyst in the CIA? Also, who provided the evidence of the affiliation? If it was China...

you're a smart guy. i'm surprised you asked this question. the answer is "yes" of course. so if i were you i'd be careful with the "we" part (in other words, watch with whom you affiliate yourself).

assuming that "we" in this case means the common people, understand that the needs of the people are never met. this is the future. learn to live off the radar or lose your life. there's no going back because those in power have no such motivation to do so. they worked too hard spinning all that bullshit to get people to go along with it.

feiren, "evidence" is part of the jurist prudence system. none of that applies in these cases (which is the point).
